If your dog is near the upper end of the size chart from Carhartt’s website, I recommend getting the larger size! My dog has a 19-inch neck and a 26-inch chest, which technically makes him a “medium” according to the 22-28 girth range on the chart. However, when the jacket arrived, it became clear that 28 inches is the absolute maximum size it can accommodate, not the practical size. The chest strap had less than an inch of Velcro left to secure it, resulting in a very tight fit. The strap has even come off a couple of times when my dog was jumping around.
Despite the tight fit, it’s a good jacket. It isn’t as warm as his previous flannel-lined jacket from LL Bean, but it is more waterproof, which is great for rainy outings.

I have medium-sized dogs (40lbs), and the fit of the coats is generally great. It would be even better if they were about 2 inches longer to cover their hip area a bit more. Other than that, the coats are adorable, well-made, and comfortable.

This is an excellent jacket, particularly for dogs like mine who aren’t fond of full jackets with sleeves. It’s surprisingly water-resistant and keeps him dry underneath, although the jacket doesn’t have much filling. It’s very durable, and I really appreciate the pockets for poop bags 😆. Definitely a 10/10.

The pockets are handy if you want your dog to carry something; mine carries his own poop bags on walks. My only issue is that it’s a bit too big on him. He weighs 50 lbs, and we got him a large; the chest area is a little loose, but the length is perfect. The medium likely would have been too small.
